Local Crime Update 15/08/2023

Dear Residents

Please find below the crime record for the period from 1st August to 15th August.

Unfortunately the last two weeks has seen quite a lot of thefts of motor vehicle offences. Steering wheel locks and Faraday Cases are still both good tools to reduce the chances of your vehicle being stolen.  Additionally on a recent visit to a victim of vehicle interference I discovered that lead containers can also be very useful in jamming signal between devices and keys.  He had a hollowed out a small piece of wooden broom handle wrapped lead round it and put the keys inside.

It was also very worrying to see an elderly person fall for the tricks of a fraudster handing over their card and withdrawing a large amount of money.  Fortunately a payment the fraudster made on the victim’s card was stopped by the bank.  Sadly the bank said they wouldn’t be able to recover the money withdrawn from the account.  Remember your bank would never phone you and ask for your card or a withdrawal.

A big thank you to the staff at Shortlands Station for their prompt action which led to the arrest of a robbery suspect.  Sadly the other suspect escaped.

On a more positive note it’s good to see there were no thefts of tools from vans in the last fortnight.  This is particularly pleasing as this type of offence has been a problem in some previous summers.  Number plate theft seems to be one of the more common theft from motor vehicle offences at the moment.  If possible try to have screw on rather than stick on plates as these are much harder to remove.  Also don’t leave personal documents in vehicles as these can be stolen and used by fraudsters.  Also very pleasing to see no burglaries over the last fortnight.

On the community engagement side we’ve attended another Buzzers Club at St Mark’s Church and are due to attend two more this month.  We’re really enjoying this and it’s great that the children are so enthusiastic.  Our next Cuppa with A Copper Event’s on Thursday 24/08/23 from 1100 to midday.  There’ll be a Ward Panel meeting in the Friends Room, at St Mary’s Church, Kingswood Road at 7.30 pm on 29th August.  A drop in surgery at Shortlands Library, Shortlands Road will be held from 10am to 11am on Saturday 02/09/23.

Look forward to seeing you at some of these events.

Thanks as always for your help and support.

Kind regards

Adam
