27 Aug Phone Call Scam: Council Tax – August 26
Dear Residents,
I hope you’re all well. I’m writing to tell you about a new kind of scam that occurred on Shortlands & Park Langley Ward at the weekend, aimed at young adults.
A male in his mid-20s received several phone calls from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller told him he would be arrested if he didn’t pay his council tax. After several calls the victim was persuaded to give his bank details. He checked his account shortly afterwards & noticed withdrawals of £150 & £6. The victim is in contact with his bank who he’s hoping will reimburse him.
Remember the police would never make a telephone call asking for your bank details.
Fraud of this nature should be reported to Action Fraud (Report Fraud), either by telephone or online which is the national reporting service for fraud and cyber-crime. Reports are assessed and, where appropriate, allocated to the relevant law enforcement agency for investigation. This avoids the victim having to make duplicate reports.

On a happier note, I’ve managed to restart drop-in surgeries at Shortlands Library. It will be in the Friends Room at St Mary’s Church, Kingswood Road on Saturday 05/09/26 from 3pm to 4pm.
Also, a reminder our next “Cuppa With A Copper” session is this Friday (28/08/26). It will be from 10am to 11am at Costa Coffee, Westmoreland Road.
